Booking your first set of lash extensions can feel a little unknown — Will it hurt? How long does it take? What do I do beforehand? After years of welcoming first-timers into my Midtown Miami studio, here's exactly what to expect so you can relax and enjoy it.
First-timers are some of my favorite clients — I walk you through every step, and the most common thing I hear afterward is 'that was so relaxing, I fell asleep.'
Your first lash appointment takes about 1.5–2.5 hours. Come with clean, makeup-free eyes and no caffeine if you can. You'll lie back comfortably while I apply extensions to closed eyes — it's painless. Afterward, keep them dry for 24 hours and follow simple aftercare. Plan to book a fill in 2–3 weeks.
Before your appointment
- Arrive with clean eyes — no eye makeup, mascara, or oily skincare around the eyes.
- Skip the caffeine if you can; it can make eyes flutter, which slows application.
- Plan your time — a full set takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours. It's a relaxing window, so enjoy it.
- Come with questions — we'll do a quick consultation to map the right style for your eyes.
During your appointment
You'll lie back on a comfortable bed with your eyes gently closed the entire time. Your lower lashes are protected with soft pads, and I isolate and apply each extension to your natural lashes. There's no pain — most clients drift off to sleep. We'll have chosen your classic, hybrid, or volume set during the consultation based on your natural lashes and the look you want.
Right after
You'll open your eyes to a full, custom set. The only firm rule for the first 24 hours: keep them dry while the adhesive fully cures. After that, your simple routine begins.
Aftercare in a nutshell
- No water, steam, or sweat for 24 hours.
- Cleanse daily with an oil-free, lash-safe cleanser.
- Brush with a spoolie each morning.
- Avoid oil-based products and rubbing your eyes.
Miami's climate adds a few extra considerations — see my full humidity aftercare guide.
Keeping them beautiful
Extensions shed with your natural lash cycle, so plan a fill every 2–3 weeks. If you decide extensions aren't for your lifestyle, a lash lift is a lovely low-maintenance alternative.
Frequently Asked Questions
How should I prepare for my first lash appointment?
Arrive with clean, makeup-free eyes, avoid caffeine if possible, and set aside up to 2.5 hours. Avoid oily eye products beforehand so the adhesive bonds well.
Do eyelash extensions hurt?
No. Extensions are applied to your lashes, not your skin, while your eyes stay gently closed. Most clients find it so relaxing they fall asleep.
How long does a first full set take?
Usually 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the style and your natural lashes.
Can I wear makeup to my lash appointment?
It's best to come with clean, bare eyes. Eye makeup and oily products can interfere with adhesion, so removing them ahead of time gives you the best, longest-lasting result.
